The law firm of Milberg LLP is investigating Skechers USA, Reebok International, MBT, and Avia for possible violations of federal and state laws.
Recently, several companies have begun promoting “toning” shoes. These shoes are designed with what are commonly known as “rocker bottoms.” The companies claim that their toning shoes help wearers achieve significant health benefits, including extra calorie burn, muscle toning, improved circulation, and improved posture. However, some studies suggest that these claims may be false, and therefore detrimental to consumers. Even worse, some doctors believe that the design of these shoes may cause injury to some wearers. Specifically, people who have problems with balance, or who are predisposed to injuries in their ankles, achilles tendons, or hamstrings, may exacerbate these conditions by wearing the shoes.
Skechers has promoted its “Shape-up” line of shoes as allowing wearers to “Get in shape without setting foot in the gym” and as helping to improve circulation, posture, and muscle tone. Reebok has similarly promoted its line of “EasyTone” shoes by claiming they “help tone your butt and legs with every step.” Two other companies that have manufactured “toning” shoes include MBT Masai Barefoot and Avia Avi-Motion.
