The law firm of Milberg LLP is investigating Seagate Technology for possible violations of consumer protection laws.

Milberg is investigating whether Seagate is honoring the warranty it promises consumers who purchase certain models of its hard drives.  Seagate promises consumers that “inside the box” is a “manufacturer’s 5-Year limited warranty” or “3-year limited warranty.”  Despite this, some consumers have been told by Seagate that their hard drives are not covered by any warranty, based upon the serial number of their hard drives.

If these allegations are true, they may constitute violations of both federal and state consumer protection laws, including laws that regulate warranties and laws that relate to advertising.  Even consumers who have not yet sought warranty service may have been harmed by this behavior, because they may have paid extra for a warranty that Seagate may have no intention of honoring.
