Unlike other auction websites, consumers who participate in penny auctions must purchase their bids usually for 25 cents to $1, and some websites require consumers to purchase bid packages for over $50. The penny auctions then allow bidders to continue bidding with the amounts only going up a penny until the countdown clock expires. However, time may be added to the countdown if a bidder makes a bid before the last 10 seconds, for instance.
Some penny auction websites include quibids.com, swipebid.com, and beezid.com. Many consumers have complained that the auction sites may be defrauding consumers of a true chance to win the merchandise they are bidding on before the countdown ends by inserting bots or computer programs to artificially bid on the items and drive up the number of bids placed while also adding time to the clock. The Better Business Bureau has even warned consumers about the misleading tactics of penny auctions.
