LEVAQUIN INVESTIGATION

Levaquin is in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones that are used to treat lung, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria. Levaquin was approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 and has been prescribed to millions of people.

Fluoroquinolones are marketed under various brand names including:

  • Levaquin
  • Cipro and generic ciprofloxacin
  • Cipro XR and Proquin XR
  • Avelox
  • Factive
  • Noroxin
  • Floxin and generic ofloxacin

Levaquin Side Effects
On July 8, 2008, the FDA ordered its strongest warning to be placed on Levaquin, alerting patients that Fluoroquinolones, including LEVAQUIN, are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in all ages.  This risk is further increased in older patients usually over 60 years of age, in patients taking corticosteroid drugs, and in patients with kidney, heart or lung transplants.

Injuries
Levaquin has been linked to hundreds of reports of serious tendon injuries and ruptures.  By 2006, the FDA’s database showed 259 reported cases of tendinitis, 262 cases of tendon ruptures, and 274 cases of other tendon disorders associated with fluoroquinolones.

  • Tendinitis is inflammation, irritation, and swelling of a tendon, which is the fibrous structure that joins muscle to bone.  Long-term inflammation raises the risk of further injury, such as rupture.
  • A ruptured tendon refers to a snapped or torn tendon, which can cause excruciating pain and may result in a permanent disability.  Depending on the degree and type of injury, ruptured tendons may be treated with surgery or through immobilization, such as with a cast.

Get medical help right away if you get any of the following signs or symptoms of a tendon rupture:

  • hear or feel a snap or pop in a tendon area
  • bruising right after an injury in a tendon area
  • unable to move the affected area or bear weight

If you or a loved one have been prescribed Levaquin and experienced any of these symptoms, you may contact us for a free consultation.
