A New York Times article entitled, GPS Watch Can Be an Unreliable Running Partner, asserted that global positioning system, or GPS, watches made by Nike, Garmin, and Timex do not accurately track distance or speed. The author said her GPS watch recorded her run as six miles, but according to Google Maps, the actual distance was more like 6.5 miles. Other runners quoted in the article said the discrepancies in the metrics play havoc on their training goals.
The Director of Marketing at one of the GPS watch manufacturers admitted: “The watches are very much a work in progress. We all use pretty much the same technology. The technology is improving, but some inaccuracy remains. People don’t understand that.”
