Recently, many shoe manufacturers, including but not limited to Nike Free, Merrell, New Balance, Vibram FiveFingers, Reebok, Saucony, Adidas, Asics and K-Swiss, have begun promoting their new lines of “barefoot” or minimal support footwear lines. These shoes are designed with little support to simulate running barefoot. The basic idea is that individuals who wear the shoes will adjust their strides to land toward the front of the foot, rather than on the heel, which is supported in traditional, cushioned shoes. The manufactures promote their shoes as a “healthy alternative” to traditional footwear, and they will lead to a stronger and healthier body by strengthening muscles, improving range of motion, stimulating neural function and improving alignment.
However, some studies suggest that these claims may not be accurate, and therefore detrimental to consumers. Even worse, some doctors believe that the design of these shoes may cause injury to some wearers. Specifically, people who need more support or who are predisposed to injuries that these minimalist shoes may exacerbate.
