Milberg LLP is investigating Illinois-based insurance company, Allstate Corporation, for possible violations of federal and state consumer laws.

Allstate has agreed to stop selling its “Your Choice Auto” (YCA) insurance in California after a consumer protection organization accused the insurance company of ripping off drivers.  Consumer Watchdog, a nonprofit organization with offices in California and Washington, D.C., said Allstate will stop selling its YCA product to California drivers after the consumer group made public its investigation that the company engaged in deceptive marketing practices in violation of California law.

Last year, the group formally challenged the program before the California Department of Insurance claiming that Allstate was violating California’s good driver discount law; unfairly discriminating against drivers despite their good driving record; selling a deceptive product; and encouraging irresponsible driving. Under its YCA program, Allstate charges 15% higher-than-normal premiums to insurance customers, with the promise that future tickets or accidents would not be used to increase premiums.  But a Consumer Watchdog investigation found that the promised benefits are not justified by the 15% premium because the company only offers the program to drivers with good driving records, a perk that is given to any California driver with a good driving record by other insurance companies for no extra charge.
