Manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Actos was approved in 1999 to help lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Actos sales soared as high as $4.3 million after 2007, when competing drug Avandia was found to increase risk of heart attack. Unfortunately, Actos’ safety is now in question, as research emerges linking the diabetes drug to a 40 percent increased risk of bladder cancer.
Actos Linked to Bladder Cancer Risk
In June 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated a label change for Actos regarding its link to bladder cancer. This announcement is based on the FDA’s review of an ongoing, 10-year study measuring the safety of Actos. The study has found that those who take Actos for more than one year or at the highest cumulative dose are 40 percent more likely to develop bladder cancer.
European Countries Take Action Against Actos
In its Actos safety announcement, the FDA noted a cohort study conducted in France that also found an increased risk for bladder cancer associated with Actos use. This study has led the French Medicines Agency to suspend the use of Actos in France until further research is available. Based on the French study, Germany’s Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Devices has disallowed new prescriptions of Actos until further notice.
Actos Lawsuits
Lawsuits have already been filed against Takeda Pharmaceuticals by Actos victims claiming that use of the diabetes drug caused them to develop bladder cancer. Legal experts predict that lawsuits could number in the thousands. Symptoms of bladder cancer may include:
